What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is a procedure used to remove a tooth from its socket. At Magrath Dental, our dentists recommend extraction only when a less invasive treatment is unlikely to be effective or when keeping the tooth may lead to further problems.
Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons, including significant damage that cannot be repaired, severe decay, or infection.
Extractions are also sometimes recommended to prepare for other restorative treatments, such as dentures or dental implants.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to develop, usually between ages 17 and 25. Because they often lack enough room to erupt properly, they can become impacted or grow in at angles that make cleaning difficult.
This can increase the risk of discomfort, infection, or crowding. If your wisdom teeth are causing issues or are likely to affect your oral health, your dentist may recommend removing them.
Repairing Excessive Damage
In most cases, your dentist will work to save a tooth whenever possible. However, there are circumstances, such as injury, gum disease, or excessive decay, which may require extraction.
If a tooth needs to be extracted, your dentist will review replacement options with you, which may include dental bridges, implants, or dentures, depending on your needs.
