Oral Hygiene and Recall exams

Have you ever been tempted to skip a dental appointment or thought that it isn’t necessary to see the dentist on a yearly basis? If you have,
take a moment to consider what your check-up really involves.

Your check-up includes important services in addition to the cleaning and polishing of your teeth. During your visit, our experienced staff will perform a comprehensive diagnostic examination of your teeth and mouth. This exam involves thorough check for tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, tooth wear from grinding, toothbrush abrasion, diet analysis/counselling, and the deterioration of old crowns, bridges and fillings.

The old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is particularly true when it comes to your teeth. Problems diagnosed at an early stage can normally be treated in a quick and easy fashion, while those that go undetected for too long often result in serious, costly, and sometimes uncomfortable dental health problems.

Dental Restorations

Fillings
Cavities result from acid demineralization of tooth structure. In order to repair these teeth we need to first remove the areas of soft tooth structure. We can then restore the prepared area with many different types of filling materials. In our office we normally use white fillings which are composed of plastic with glass fillers. The use of this type of filling material requires a high level of isolation (eg. the preparation has to be dry and free of blood or saliva). If this is not achievable, we also offer traditional silver fillings. In certain situations where a higher strength material is desired, we may also restore a tooth with materials such as metal alloys or ceramics.

Crowns
Sometimes teeth cannot be repaired with a filling material alone. When a tooth is significantly compromised it may need to be restored with a crown (also known as a dental cap). This type of restoration completely caps or encircles a tooth in order to help prevent the tooth from fracturing apart. Crowns may also be used to improve the appearance and function of your teeth.

During the first appointment the tooth needs to be reduced or prepared in order to provide enough room for the thickness of the crown itself. An impression is then made of the teeth and sent to a dental laboratory where a technician custom fabricates this prosthetic. Crowns can be made of metal, a combination of porcelain and metal, or porcelain (including other ceramic materials such as lithium dislocate or zirconia). Selecting the right material will depend on factors such as longevity, strength, and esthetics. You will go home after the first appointment with a custom made acrylic crown. Once the prosthetic is fabricated, for the second appointment we will try-in and make adjustments to the crown before cementing or bonding it onto your tooth.
In our office we offer the Zoom whitening system. This system can help whiten your teeth with an at home whitening kit or an in-office treatment to provide the greatest results.

The at home kit involves fabricating custom trays for your mouth and wearing the trays along with the whitening gel for about two weeks to four weeks. The whitening effect will vary depending on the unique composition of your teeth.

The in-office treatment usually takes about an hour. We will isolate your teeth and apply the whitening gel which works together with the Zoom light to help penetrate the teeth better and break up the stains and discolouration. We usually do three to four 15-minute treatments during which you may relax, watch TV, or listen to music.

Bridges
Bridges are used when there is a missing tooth in between two healthy teeth. It is used to “bridge the gap” with a prosthetic tooth. The process and materials used to fabricate this type of restoration are the same as with crowns but will involve multiple teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Veneers
Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers ) are very thin, custom made shells of tooth coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. The process involves a mild preparation of your tooth structure. An impression is made of your teeth and sent to a dental laboratory where a technician fabricates the veneers. These are then bonded to the front of the teeth in order to change their colour, shape, size or length. This procedure can achieve the highest esthetic results.

Bonding
This a procedure where your dentist applies a tooth coloured filling material (composite resin – which is composed of plastic with glass filler) to the front of your teeth in order to alter their colour, shape, size or length. It is a cost-effective solution compared with veneers but has some limitations since it is applied and finished inside your mouth.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) involves the removal of the infected pulp tissues of a tooth, thereby eliminating the infection and protecting the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.

Oral Surgery

Sometimes teeth may not be restorable, infected, or may need to be removed to prevent future problems (eg. wisdom teeth). In most cases, we can help you to remove these types of teeth. To help make this appointment more comfortable we offer both oral and nitrous oxide sedation. If the procedure is more complicated or you require general anesthesia, we can facilitate the referral to an Oral Surgeon.

Sports Guards

It is very important to protect your teeth while playing sports. While you can get these at the drugstore they often do not fit properly. This is very
important in protecting against broken teeth and oral injuries.

Night Guards

Many people clench and grind their teeth during their sleep. Over many years this can lead to significant wear which may result in sensitive teeth and jaw joint problems. It may require significant dental work, time, and finances in order to restore a mouth full of worn down teeth. In order to prevent these issues it may be necessary to wear a custom made dental device on a nightly basis.

Teeth Whitening

In our office we offer the Zoom whitening system. This system can help whiten your teeth with an at home whitening kit or an in-office treatment to provide the greatest results.

The at home kit involves fabricating custom trays for your mouth and wearing the trays along with the whitening gel for about two weeks to four weeks. The whitening effect will vary depending on the unique composition of your teeth.
